What are Traveling Teacher Guides?

The Traveling Teacher Guides are books (Greenland and the Republic of Georgia) written by teachers, for teachers. By Us. For Us. You know, the hip teachinistas we all know and think we are. More importantly, they're the no-holds-barred type of stuff that you WISH every guide book could write. Nitty-gritty, down and dirty, and the fastest way to get the real scoop on a place quickly.

Our music projects are performances by cool local bands and singers who voluntarily give their time and music to help us create MP3/4s. How awesome is that?

Project: Oktomberi

Your contributions to the Traveling Teachers have helped rebuild a school in Georgia.

Working through Zugdidi-based NGO Atinati, a generous contribution from the Aasland Foundation of Norway, and moral support of the US embassy in Tbilisi, Traveling Teacher Guides made a substantial contribution to new windows on the ground floor of a severely damaged school outside of Zugdidi, Georgia. The project also encouraged students to request assistance from and petition their local government, who contributed addtitional funds and new desks. The local community also was involved, and parents and students painted the hallways and created new curtains for the classrooms.

Guidelines

Traveling Teacher Guides: Submissions can be of any length, but essays of less than 2500 words work best. No one except your grandmother wants to read more than five pages of a travel monologue at ANY time.

You can get a publishing credit, or you can publish anonymously (but you'll still have to sign an electronic release form). We look favorably on real-name submissions, as people tend to be more serious when they have their name to back-up.

False or fake submissions are pointless and waste everyone's time. We use professional editing services (who donate their services free of charge). Somehow, something that isn't true usually rings out. This, and the fact that Santa sees you, should be enough incentive to help us help others. Why waste your time writing something that isn't true?

Your submission cannot mention specific names or schools. Town names and detail are fine, but room 22, on the fourth floor, at 59 Rustaveli Avenue in Gori is not.

Music for Travelers: Music that is original production or in the public domain can be submitted by digital file (MP3 or MP4 format preferable although we can convert most files), or we will do our best to get a passable audio recording. Even more so than the guides, copyright is a major factor in creating music projects, and we must be sure your submission is free and clear of any copyright claims. This is for you as much as us.

Submissions

By submitting a submission, you electronically give the Traveling Teacher Guide series permission to use your work for publication (anonymously or with your name), distribution, sale, re-publication, duplication, as a coaster, booster seat or doorstop. We do not pay you for you work, or are obligated to print your work.

You acknowledge that your work has the possibility to be published. You acknowledge that we have the right to refuse any submission unsuitable for publication. You acknowledge that we have the right to edit your work for length, content or other things that would get you or us in trouble with the man.

After submitting material (unless you acknowledge that you have voluntarily and willingly submitted work), you must electronically sign a permission slip/release form authorizing permission to take you on a field trip AND to publish your work, acknowledging this legal stuff and accepting full responsibility that the work you submit in good faith is indeed truthful and yours, and not the work of your roommate, significant other or some dead author you've been channeling.

What happens after I submit material?

We have a good laugh and scold each other that we ever doubted there were still good people in the world. Seriously. Then, your work will be professionally edited and placed in the guide or on the CD in the order it was received, unless it was a seriously great piece. Then we hustle it up to first place to grab some attention.

We send you back an electronic permission form, which basically says you give us permission to publish your work, and whether you want your name attached or to publish anonymously. For CD's, we publish with your name, photo and bio. We follow strict copyright, so any piece submitted must be completely work created by you or in the public domain.

After that, we get an ISBN and put it on Amazon and Kindle (yes, really), where the masses will read your book and listen to your music. For music projects, we put out a CD and an MP3/4 download. Trust us, someone does read it, does listen to it and does want it. We publish one edition, and if there's enough demand, we'll update it within a year.

What should I write about and what type of music are you looking for?

Traveling Teacher Guides: The series breaks down things in chapters like any guide book, but we focus on practicalities and experience. Write about one of the chapter themes or all of them, but then you would have your own book and wouldn't want us:( Usually, essay form works best. Discuss the theme. Give lots of detail. Be funny and clever. Detailed, informative narrative works better than dreary IT WAS THE WORSE EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE pity parties, but if that's what it was for you, then write it. Usually, at the end of each essay, we encourage people to give at least one helpful hint (AVOID THE MEAT FROM THE BAZAAR) or if something is really useful, a super big hint (YOU WILL DIE IF YOU EAT THE MEAT FROM THE BAZAAR). Anything that saves money, makes life more wonderful for cash-strapped/time-crazed teachers and/or saves a life is usually a good hint. Humor goes a long, long way.

That's nice, but I need something a little more concrete! The chapters are arranged in a broad range of topics to get everyone's viewpoint in. At the end of the book are lists of contacts and numbers so people can get more information. There also is an up-to-date list of links to get more information. In short, a guide book with some attitude. Links, links, links! Found a great site that saved your life from eating the meat at the bazaar? Pay it forward and attach it to your essay.

Music for Travelers: Folk music and original pieces are usually safe from copyright nightmares. What type of music do you or your group like to perform? Imagine taking some really old stale piece and ripping it apart with a death metal beat! Take songs from your grandmother and electrify them. Almost anything works, but we usually pick a theme and it helps guide us as well as you. We want to reflect the culture and beauty of a place, but that doesn't mean we want it to be so old and boring that only folk music purists and people in god's waiting room will listen to it (and said respectfully, they usually don't know how to download anyway). Rather, we want it to be a reflection of what a country was, what it is today, and where it wants to go.
